This is the most unusual and famous film, which is forbidden in China, I did some research online and find it has been banned in UK for over 30 years because of the “brainwash” and violence, until the director Stanley Kubrick has gone in 1999.
That’s talk about the director first. Stanley Kubrick, as we know, is an attractive and debatable filmmaker in the past 40 years, while his works incurred curse as much as praise in China. For example, the incredible visual style of his films earned him critical acclaim, but the non-traditional narrative always earned critical scorn as well. Compared with other British or American directors, Kubrick's works rarely (less than 20), many film scholars thought him as a representative personage of postwar modernism, while his works always tend to performance the absurd life and tragic philosophy.
Turn back to the film, I did some research and find that the film was made in 1971. In these years, the British do some changes in industrial structure, industry is the foundation, but the IT industry developing rapidly. Maybe because of this situation, the story in this film is happend in the “future society”, that people can be brainwashed by some new treatments with the development of technology. And due to the changes of industrial structure, it leads to the economic tensions and social unrest, in that case, the student movement broke out. There were many themes of student movement, some insisted that young forces should seize power, some advocated premarital sex,at the same time, they pointed out that science is useless because science is close to war. The student movement has brought a huge impact in people's concept, also the cultural industries such as literature and film. In this context, the film discussed the violence, political and social systems, sexuality, crime and a series of problems of modern society. For example: How to guide the youth properly? What is the Humanism? Waht is freedom and moral choice? How to vent the original violence through right way? Maybe to be a good man via killing personality is so cruel and inhuman. We should not give up the right to make choice, from the begining to the end.
To talk about the Britain portrayed. Firstly, I find that the director use a lot of dramatic scenery and actors’ lines to make it like a living theater, I mean, some scenes are really symbolic in this film. For example, the writer’s home has a lot of bookshelves which is full of books, the lady’s house kept a lot of cats, the prison has the gray and dark walls...and so on, and the actors’ lines are long sentences just not like the conversations in our daily life. It is really dramatic and overstate. The following are some examples which are full of dramatic in this film:
The actors have the overstate motions and facial expressions just like standing on the stage.
The scene of suicide is artsy just like a colorful painting.
Secondly, there are many scenes of sexual violence in this films., for example, actors' costume highlights the genital like this:
The shape of some furnitures and house furnishings are just like the reproductive organs:
The most typical episode is the actor broke into the home of farmer and did the violent crime:
Thirdly, there are number of different types of music played in this film, Beethoven's No.9 Symphony is the most frequent one, in addition to this, raning song, a kind of rock also give expression to aesthetics of violence. At the same time, the first-person narrative gives a way for audience to perceived through the senses directly.
These are my opinions of “A clockwork orange” ,I wanna share with you.
