【Sherry】Google Glass~ it's Cool!

This was the moment when wearable computing stepped out of the science-fiction films and into real life. The invention of Google Glass might turn us all into cyborgs.

1: Summarise the information of Google Glass:
Google Glass is a wearable computer with an optical head-mounted display which was developed by Google in Feb. 2013.
The hardware of Google Glass including a camera, so it can be used to take pictures and recording videos in a really convenient way even without subject knowing. The voice recognition of the glass is very smart as well, consumers can use voice and a series of touch commands on the arm of the glasses to control the interface. With internet connection, Google Glass has more functions, for example, it can be used to search information, send photos to facebook or other website, use google map to get direction , make a phone call and so on.
The price of this new technical device is 1500 USD for explorer version but might be a little bit cheaper for comsumers in 2014. However, at the moment, there is a limited amount you can do with Glass, because the lack of dominant and useful apps, and there are also some serious debates about its legal and social implications because of some functions.

2: What are the issues ?
There are two kind of issues, one is about technical problems:
There is not enough apps to Google Glass, so the function is limited no matter how smart the device is. Some explorer user said that the command should be given by voice and gestures, so it looks a little bit daft and weird when you talk to yourself on the street. And the display screen is not big enough so it might be harm to the eyes when stare at it and read the information. Some explorer user also complain about that there is no version for shortsightedness person so the user need to wear the contact glasses before use the Google Glass. Some other issues are from the complaint about the storage, sound, msharpness of separation , and the price as well.

However, the most serious issue is about privacy:
Where Google's big idea impresses most is as a camera. Because it captures exactly what you see, you get the kind of pictures you often miss with a camera you have to ready for action. But because the camera can be used even without the subject knowing and the pictures straight to cloud, even to the internet with the wifi or 3G connection, people are afraid of their privacy would be exposed with careless abandon
On the other hand, this kind of problems are hard to be solved because the lack of law and the debate of its legal. Althought this new technology promises to reshape our relationship with the online world.

3: What are the solutions?
For the technical problems, Google promised to improve and develop the control of interface and make project cooperation with glasses producters, the special Google Glass for shortsightedness person would be created in future.l
For the privacy issue, there are 7 countries Privacy Commissioner, including Canada, the Netherlands, Australia, New Zealand, Mexico, Israel and Switzerland, signed a joint letter to ask for more information about Google Glass and test whether it would leak the privicy or not. Google also be request to answer some questions in public, for example: how does Google Glass comply with the Data Protection Act? What kind of privacy protection measures google would make?and so on.

4: My view and other comments of Google Glass:
In my opinion, the advance of technology always full of debate, but it doesnt mean that we should not attempt to new technical device. Google Glass, brings us a more convient way to captures exactly every moment in our daily life, and it also makes it possible to live a technical life without the use of normal laptop or smartphone. To talk about its appearance, either the wearable computer or head-mounted display make us look like the future style,it attract me a lot, it also have the positive influence on the disabled people who cannot use their hands typing on the keyboard. It is a kind of humanitarian, isnt it?

Although there are some critiques said that “Google Glass Isn’t the Future of Wearables”, link:http://blogs.hbr.org/2013/10/google-glass-isnt-the-future-of-wearables/

People also thought this kind of werable computing technology is more creepy than cool, like some comments in internet:
“Social awkwardness is the major problem and likely hinder for adoption of such devices.  The rate at which technology is surpassing our beliefs, I think the next stage is already in the horizon, which is implants.This not only solves the problem of awkwardness (If executed appropriately), but also merges humans with technology at its highest level.”

  1. When I read the original link from Andrew, It’s the first time I know the Google Glass. After I read thought the article and watched the video clip, I listed down several questions:
    1. What would happen if the Google Glass is without network?
    2. Is that a bit silly you talk to yourself on the street?
    3. How about the people with nearsightedness, farsightedness and astigmatism?
    4. Will it distribute people’s attention, especially while walking? Need close left eye?
    5. How many languages could be recognized so far? Only English?
    6. Is there any privacy concern?
    7. Is it really useful for ordinary people?
    8. Is it experience? For $1500?
    9. It can read messages, then how about typing messages?
Then, today I have read sherry’s reviews and commons. They are really useful. She answered my no.2, no.3, no.6, no.8 questions.
In addition, I really not appreciate with Google Glass yesterday and I thought of a lot of criticisms about this products. However, today I read though sherry’s review, I have got some new ideas. I feel that the pictures and video which are made by Google Glass are really amazing~
Furthermore, I find some links about the usage of Google Glass in future healthcare and education. I believe the Google Glass might be more useful for professionals.

To sum up, like what sherry said, so far it is definitely immature but it creates the new trend about ‘wearable technology’. For the long-term, it is nonetheless worth-trying, as long as it becomes cheaper.

    1. Elise~your questions made me think about my view again, I search some information in internet to answer some of the questions:
1: Without the wifi connection , Google Glass also have some functions like check calendar, make a phone call, but most of the functions would be limited even the camera. because the pictures you take by glass would straight to cloud.
4:from some comments which be given by explorer user, it would not distribute people's attention but you should adapt to the new way to watch the display, and it might make you uncomfortable at the first time when you use google glass
      5. the glass could just recognize English yet.
      7, I think it's a subjective question ,isn't it? haha
      9. I didn't find the information about typing messages with Google Glass, I guess it isn't the function of this new device.
Anyway, your reply is really useful for me, I would do more reading and think about Google Glass again. And you may think about its humanitarian, because google glass make us free from the hand using.

    2. Cheers, sherry~
I do agree with its humanitarian design especially for some disables. However, some limitation is the product itself, like typing problems and privacy problems. And I check the apps lists so far.
      http://glass-apps.org/glass-developer
Most of them are about camera and video recorded. In addition, some game developers said they were trying to program some games for the Google Glass. I feel interested in this part. If they do create a game for the Google Glass, it will be a great innovation.
Moreover, for my question no.7, I feel some potential of Google Glass for some professionals, like the link I post there. It talks about the Google Glass used in operations and it will be more easily to show the progression to the students.
Thus it has a long way to go and I will take a cautiously positive wait-and-see attitude.

  2. Google Glass is so interesting for me, because I saw this type of glasses in cartoon when I was in childhood and I was attracted by it. It can by sensuous operation, so it may also be useful for people who have physical disabilities (I agree with Sherry's opinion). However, I cannot blindly welcome, and I mind some issues about privacy (Sherry pointed out) or the way to use.
    for example:
How can we realise peeping photos?
Can we realise it is on or off from outside?
What is the manner of using it?
Is it okay to use it during driving?
Does it make us have lack of attention during walking or driving?
I think it may be hard to decide what legal or illegal is.

Although I'm worried about it, I'm still attracted by it. It makes me fun to imagine using Goole Glass in the future like using smartphones now!

    2. Saaya , Thank you for your reply.
I think it's really a problem of Google Glass's privacy issue. but like you said , it's hard to distinguish legal from illegal.
The technical problems also need to be improved, i agree with you. it might take a long period of time to develop its comfortable and make people accept this kind of wearable computing technology.
Thank you for your sources about the google glass's safety when driving, it makes me think it deeper.
To Talk about this kind of wearable device, I think it's the trend of future technology but it also depends on people's acceptable and the design of it.

  3. My first subjective impression of Google Glass is unpractical, maybe because its appearance is a bit weird like a device testing sight, or likely because of my little sense of fear of high-tech products. When I saw the shortsightedness person wore the Google Glass and the contact glasses at the same time from the video clip, I thought of the uncomfortable sense that I wear my contact glasses and 3D Glass in the cinema. And I could imagine the daft situation that a person speaks to himself wearing the Glass.

However, objectively considering Google Glass, I have to admit that it has many advanced functions. Like all of you, I also agree with the it is useful for disabled people. The smart voice recognition, camera and video function are indeed attractive, especially the much steadier footage. The usage of Google Glass in future healthcare and education (Elise mentioned) is very helpful. After I saw the pictures of Google Glass in Sherry’s article, I even think the appearance of the glass looks cool. If the glass could appeal to a wide audience with a right price, I think many problems like apps, connecting network, languages could be solved soon. But harming to the eyes and the privacy from Google Glass will still be very difficult to solve.

I take a cautiously positive wait-and-see attitude to Google Glass as well. When the glass become mature and professional in the future, maybe like that many consumers experience Apple in App Store every day, Google Glass Store become busy and welcomed. At that time, I will try to experience it or even buy it.

    1. Your feedback is really useful Jessica, because you are the kind of people who are hardly trust and use the technical device ,sometimes the technology is stupid, isn't it? haha
The comfortable is a problem for Google Glass and may has the negetive effects on the users, i agree with you. At the same time, because of the design, the wearable device always looks a little bit strange and weired, I also found some critisms in internet said that Google Glass has a huge gap with fashion, because of its apperance. I think this might be one of the reason why Google Glass is hard to be widely accepted. People tend to use the normal technical device like the smartphone and loptop, because it would not make you alien.
So, to the wearable computer, I think there are both the advantages and disadvantages for its wearable feature.Maybe we also need a long period of time to make it widly use, although they are really useful.

  4. Imagine that if u r from the future, how would u think about it?
The current situation is just like what happened decades ago, when people were talking about wireless phones.
When the Glass comes to the world, it would be sure that this new idea will change the world deeply by shaping our daily behavior, our concept of life.
And, this idea is not just a design of modern intelligent terminal, it is a design of the way we do things.

Another thing i want to mention is that ‘the extension of human'. it seems that we forgot the basic question——what is human? if our mind (or brain) is human, then our body becomes 'the extension' of our mind. it sounds crazy, because it may happen that in the end of the human history human beings will find themselves are like a high-tech machine with a biological brain. LOL
i think technology is like drugs, the more you use it, the more dependent on it you will be . This may be the main reason of rejecting a new-invented convenient technology.

Just some ideas to share~ :D

    1. OMG!Thank you John. Your ideas are really creative i think. I never thought like "our mind (or brain) is human, then our body becomes 'the extension' of our mind" before, but you give me a new idea about the high level of technology used.
Maybe I partly agree with "technology is like drugs, the more you use it, the more dependent on it you will be." However, when I thought about the pass time, using technical devices always make my life easier and better. Maybe I am a victim of it~~T-T
